Location: Neptunes Folly

ON:

Liams mouth was dangling open.

"How did you manage this again Niska?" he asked.

"Your engineering chief told me holodec tech was not a priority. Now we have other ships docking, one of them well ... he had the goods. So now I have 2 small holodecs. Saving your chief a job," the half orion told him.

"Im not sure Chief Stoun will be that happy ..." Liam muttered.

"Well he can come tell me himself if that's the case. When he has a minute. Its still going to need more work on some of the programming anyway. I gathered I was somewhere in the 700's for job ticketing. I'm sure it will be a while before the bald man makes it around to me. Meanwhile people need entertaining and I like profits so ... are you using it or not?" she insisted at her step cousin.

"Does it have a beach programme?" Liam asked flicking through the information.

"Here," she found one and pressed it.

Liam watched as the room disappeared around them being replaced by warm sand and crystal blue seas. There were palm trees and a drinks hut not far.

"Not bad. This will work, ahhhh Alena ...." he grinned as the door opened allowing her access. "Ready to relax and connect with your inner abilities?"

"Hello", Alena greeted Niska and Liam. She looked around. The beach looked very appealing. "I'm ready to try to connect with my abilities. So far, all they have given me is headaches", she said. It was the first time in a long time she had seen a beach. While some cadets at the Academy had enjoyed going, she hadn't gone often.

It had mainly been because the cadets had been partying, and Alena had no liking for that. She preferred a good book over a loud party. Always had, even back in Brazil as a child.

"Great, well ladies. Take a seat," Liam said sitting down cross legged. "And the first thing we are going to do is work on shielding. You open up your abilities you still need to be able to have mental shields in place or you can get overwhelmed. Niska I know you can sense emotions but Alena what about you? Can you tell what people are feeling?"

Alena shrugged. "A little bit. Mostly what seems like strong emotions. I tend to sense what intentions people have, mostly. It has been useful, but it has also caused me some trouble", she told Liam as she sat as he did.

"Oh yes being an empath can definitely get you in trouble," Liam said.

"Right well the first thing we are going to learn is shielding. Emotions, especially the more negative ones can hurt. I mean anger, that can feel like darts piercing my skin. Worry, that can feel like a lump in my stomach. And when you get hit by some powerful ones not expecting it, like I said it can be overwhelming .....

So what we have to do is find a feeling of strength, protection in our mind and link that to an anchor. I want to run through some meditation practices to start creating that anchor. Both of you naturally have some protective mindsets in place or you wouldn't be able to walk the amount of people round here. But the more you get better at reading people the more people your going to sense in one go."

Alena nodded her understanding. It made sense. For her, she had always thought of the things she picked up from other people's emotions and behavior, as individual books, she could shelve after feeling them for a short while. Growing up in an environment that hadn't liked her, she had learned to tune out the negativity in order to not get depressed herself.

"Ok so close your eyes both and I want you to start breathing deeply and letting yourself relax. I want you to focus on first of all just my emotions and then mine and each others and we are going to work up to several and maybe all the people around the promonade. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and imagine a shield in your mind around your body. This can look like anything you like. Let me know when you have that in your minds eye," Liam said calmly.

Alena did as told, breathing slowly, relaxing as she let go of her control. She felt Liam's emotions. It was interesting to see his emotions. She had never really explored this part of herself. It had always been about guarding herself from the negativity in her life.

"My shield is purple and glittery," Niska announced.

Liam smiled inwardly. That was so Niska. "And you Alena?"

"My shield is a pale amber color. It feels serene", Alena said.

"Brilliant ladies," Liam said. "No we want to anchor this. This may take a few sessions but pick something easy. I press my thumb to my index finger. Some people do a click. Effectively we went to get you back to this shield quickly if you need it."

"I have been using a snap of my fingers until now. It made it easier to push everything away", Alena said.

“Brilliant then keep that. We will just work on fortifying and making it more powerful. Niska?”

“I will touch my ring,” she muttered her fingers instantly finding the one thing still from her birthplace she had kept.

“Ok,” Liam said. He wasn’t convinced it would work as well but the fact his new cousin was even entertaining things warranted encouraging.

“So let’s move on and test our shielding. We are going to push our abilities out downstairs where there are some emotions. Alexa what can you sense? If anything gets to intense click your fingers.”

Alena closed her eyes and reached out towards where there were people. Some feelings were sad, like one had lost a dog. Some were happy feelings. Like having been given flowers by their loved one. There were also an insanely intense joy. It was a couple where the woman had just given birth to a baby boy. It was a bit too intense, so she snapped her fingers. She relayed what she had sensed to Liam.

Liam smiled at her. She was a quick study. "Keep your shields up now. Great first time but I think enough for the moment. You need to practice that now. Lets do another session in a couple of days and if .... IF you feel brave enough have a go in your quarters but get your shields up when it starts to get too intense. We will work up both of yours tolerance."

"Sounds like a plan to me", Alena said with a smile. It felt great to have some kind of control over what she picked up from others. She decided that she would bit and pieces here and there.
