Mel was ecstatic. She had landed that shuttle. It had taken 3 sessions and this pilot had been incredibly patient. She had crashed a fair few more times, but perseverance had paid off. She could do it. She couldn’t wait to tell both Charlie and Keiben.

No she needed to show Keiben. Show him her hard word had paid off. Take him for another flight where he didn’t go snow white and was terrified.
“I can’t believe I did it,” she said for about the 14th time as they left the holodeck. “Thank you so much, really thank you,” she leaned in kissed his cheek fast and gave him a small hug.

She pulled back and smiled happily. “I’ll let you get back to that wife of yours.”

Parting ways Mel disappeared down one corridor and her instructor another.

Charlie stepped out from around the corner where she had been observing, her mouth wide open. She had seen her mother kiss him. She knew something was going on.

Clunk, part of the wall suddenly moved opening out in front of her and a skinny girl in engineering colours popped out.
“Watch yourself,”

“Watch yourself, yourself,” Charlie stated back.

Minka narrowed her eyes. “What are you doing round here kid? I saw you through the grate. Spying on someone?”

“Kid? I’m a yeoman thank you. What are you doing?” she bent down to peek into the Jefferies tube. She could see nothing but certainly smell something.

Minka smirked. “Official engineering business. Go on who were you spying on?”

“I might only be 14 but I’m pretty sure official engineering business doesn’t smell like …” she sniffed it again …. “Well that’s something that belongs in a bottle with a warning.”

Minka cracked out laughing. “Okay okay how’s about I cut you in and I share my secret you share yours? Come on 14. There’s nothing to do round here. I’m sure you would love to come to a nonofficial party once I have the fruits of my labour blossoming properly.”

“Alcohol?” Charlie asked.

She nodded. “Proper stuff. And we got have a few boys too. Older but that’s not a problem. Your stuck with what’s his face. Been asking if he can apprentice.”

“Lance,” Charlie muttered. “He’s not coming to this party is he?”

“Not now,” Minka smiled. “I remember being 14. You should definitely get to have some fun.”

Charlie nodded.

“Go on then who was it?”

“My mother,” Charlie answered.

“Ahh the good doctor. What’s she been up too? Actually, yeah what has she been up too? Ive been setting this going for a while, checking back on things. She’s been in that holodeck a few times,” Minka observed.

“She was with a man,” Charlie said. “And now I think about it something strange has been going on. She’s been happier, chattier. She’s even been wearing her hair different and … oh there was an extra cup one morning. I wondered if someone had been there but she said no she just had a dumb moment ordered 2 drinks and decided to drink them both.”

“Who is he then?” Minka asked amused. “Is you mum not allowed to have a life?”

“Not with out telling me,” Charlie said annoyed. “Oh crap .. he’s coming back.

The unknown crew man disappeared back into the holodeck and came back out again carrying a jacket.

“Well they shed some clothes then,” Minka sniggered. “Follow him. You have to find out more. Go investigate girl. Now if you excuse me. I’ll message you when we are ready for party time. Its Charlie right? I remember now.”

Charlie watched the man start to disappear again down a corridor.

“Go go … you can still follow him,”

She nodded and set off.
