578 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Episode 1: Palingenesis
Location: Risa, USS Copernicus

Risa, Stardate 78267.46

In the tranquil ambiance of his villa nestled amidst the lush foliage of Risa, Lieutenant Jean Batiste hesitated before he started to compose a subspace message using the unique encryption algorithm Hiro and he developed long ago. Despite the urgency he felt to reach out to his old friend, Jean wrestled with the weight of his Captain's orders, which sternly forbade the disclosure of certain classified information.

With a conflicted heart, he typed each word, torn between loyalty to his friend and allegiance to his commanding officer.

USS Copernicus, Ready Room, 25 minutes later

Across the vast expanse of space, the console in front of Hiro flickered with an unexpected signal, drawing attention to the encrypted message from his old friend. Puzzled by the unorthodox method of communication, Hiro's mind raced with possibilities, his curiosity piqued as he pondered the reasons behind this secretive correspondence.

Due to the encryption used it had become next to impossible to retrace the subspace message to its point of origin. Jean had never gone through such lengths before so Hiro knew that whatever he wanted to say was important and of a sensitive nature.

Hiro’s fingers moved deftly as he decrypted Jean’s urgent message. The words on the screen seemed surreal, challenging the narrative he had always known. Throughout his life, Hiro had been told stories of his father’s expertise as a terraformer, an expert shaping worlds beyond the stars. Yet Jean’s revelation hinted at a hidden truth, casting doubt on the cherished memories Hiro held dear. As he pondered the implications of Jean’s message, Hiro’s mind raced, navigating the uncharted waters of his own familial history with a newfound sense of urgency. Jean’s cryptic mention of additional information, withheld due to the risk of subspace interception, only deepened Hiro’s intrigue and heightened the gravity of the situation. How could his father, the expert terraformer, have been caught up in secrets so deep Jean couldn't even risk sending them through subspace?

The message ended with a simple directive: "We must meet, mon ami."

With the weight of the truth about his father’s past heavy on his mind, Hiro keyed in the sequence of commands required to encrypt his message back to Jean, promising to meet him on Risa once he returned to Starbase 21. With a final touch, Hiro transmitted the encrypted message.

Even though he and the crew on the Copernicus had a mission to complete he found it difficult to recollect his thoughts.

Hiro reclined back in the chair, his mind a tumultuous sea of conflicting emotions and unanswered questions. The revelation about his father's true past weighed heavily on him, casting a shadow over the memories he once cherished. Lost in thought, he sifted through the fragments of his upbringing, searching for clues that might unravel the enigma of his father's identity. As he gazed out into the star-studded expanse beyond the transparent aluminum window, Hiro couldn't help but wonder how much of his life had been built upon a foundation of half-truths and hidden secrets. He knew that he could not rest until he unearthed the whole truth, no matter how difficult it may be.
