Keiben was running late and he knew it. This was not how he had intended to start his working relationship with his new assistant, although he had plans to adapt her role ever so slightly. More than anything he had gotten to know this girl over the last year or so and he could see potential in her. An innate intelligence and depth of compassion, something he wanted to nurture and help her develop. But more than that, out of everyone on the crew she would have been the one that had more to regain, more to come to terms with than the rest. Someone so young should not have been put into a situation that they had all had to simply survive.

The bridge doors opened and he found the young girl milling around the master systems display at the rear of the bridge, he waved her down into the command pit and waved for her to take the first officers seat.

"Remind me, did Captain Davies ever let you on the bridge?"

”Yes but they said I was to stay out of trouble,” Charlie answered. ”So I always just stayed out the way in the back. Is it a better time?” she asked.

"Good, because I need my assistant on the bridge when I need her but I have a few other things I want to discuss with you... So what did Captain Davies have you doing?"
Keiben leaned back in his chair, hoping he was making Charlie relaxed, he didn't want her to start tensing up.

”Taking messages and combing through his messages prioritising things mainly. Keeping an eye on his diary too, ” Charlie said. ”Sometimes if they took me into a meeting I would type up some minutes but most of the good meeting were during school hours, ” she shrugged.

"Do you want a few more jobs because Lieutenant Holt needs a yeoman as well as I, and and that is your title from now on, just like the god old days of Starfleet. And I need to speak with your mother but if she agree's perhaps, and I say only perhaps, we could bring you along on some of the survey missions, the less dangerous missions!"

He flashed her a smile, hoping this was the sort of thing she wanted to hear and would help her heal.

”Thats sounds awesome Kei... I mean sir, ” she beamed. ”I hope you can convince mum.”

"Leave that with me, don't say anything to her until I give you the all clear" he instinctively placed his hand on the kids head and rubbed it gently in an almost paternal manner. After Ian, a colleague of his not to mention Mel's husband and Charlie's father, Keiben had done what he could to be there for both Mel and Char... And he knew Ian would be so proud of this young women, her inner strength, her charisma and charm but most of all her heart. "So that's not the only reason I asked to see you... How have you been, and before you give me the usual sullen teenager reply of 'Yeah, I'm Fine' please remember that I am a Betazoid!" he put on his best your are being noisy and I'm a librarian look.

"I know that," she said. "I dunno. Mum wants me to talk to Tam. I want mum to talk to someone. I actually think I'm handling things better than her right now. She's being weird. I just threw myself into school for something else to think about to be honest," she shrugged. "Well at least my math grades going up.

"What about you? The big chair now. The big cheese," she teased him back.

"Give me some time with that one. I have my own wrestling to do" he patted the armrests not entirely sure how the tables had been turned on him... Perhaps the kid had a future as a therapist or Ships Counsellor.

"Back to you... What do you want to do with yourself in the future... Have you thought about a career path yet?"

She shook her head. ”I was thinking I might like to follow in mum and Paddys footsteps and join star fleet but I've no idea as to doing what. How did you decide?” she asked.

"Gut instinct... I loved archaeology even at a young age and what better place to do that than exploring strange new worlds. It was a no brainer for me!"
He once again looked at the girl beside him, really looked and he felt a swell of pride for her but one thing she said gave him pause. "Can I just add something... Don't do something because others have. You need to find your own path, be true to yourself. No one will think any the less of you if you don't follow in your mothers and brothers footsteps!"

"Oh no I don't want to be a doctor although Mums made sure I've picked up bits over the years. I mean that comes in helpful like when ... well yeah," she said not managing to say "the attack" yet.

"Lets just say if you broke something on my watch I could step in, but to maybe help people or communicate with them. There's other branches of Starfleet isn't there? Diplomacy, media or counselling maybe. And your right though I don't have to join Starfleet to do something like that but I enjoy doing this role and would like to learn more and at least explore it. I would be a fool not to take good opportunities to learn when there's some good people around me as mentors and good opportunities available."

"I knew you would be the person for the job" Keiben grinned. "Now we just need to meet with Lieutenant Holt and see what she has planned for you... You had any lunch yet?"

"Nope. Not yet," she answered. "You know mum can't cook so unless we replicate something I'm always starving," she joked at him.

"Come on then, lets go get something to eat!"
